Gun retailers sell air rifles to underage teenager

posted 19 Dec 2009 13:31 by Central Shooters Inc Secretary   [ updated 19 Dec 2009 15:25 by Central Shooters Inc Webmaster ]

Reported in the New Zealand Herald  Gun retailers sell air rifles to under age teenager conveniently with Air rifle controls in Govt sights

These same retailers have been the target of other media in the past. The time it was on the "Target" program

The small minority of irresponsible licensed gun owners that exist is bad enough, but gun retailers should be more responsible and setting an example as well as being aware of who they are actually selling to

I was surprised (and pleased) at how many people took part - a total of 226 competing shooters - and  thanks must go to Auckland Seascouts for Sponsoring this competition and also to Central Shooters Inc for providing the facilities and running the range.

Central Shooters Inc provided the facilities at a significantly subsidised rate, and our thanks to them for this. If you want to shoot there again - just contact Wayne and book yourself in.

Urgent Message for Hunters!

Have your say on the future of hunting and game animals in New Zealand

The establishment committee for the New Zealand Game Animal Council is holding a series of public meetings to both inform and seek feedback on their formation

Auckland 12 October 2009 7PM Hillsborough Room, Fickling Convention Centre, 546 Mt Albert Road

See the NZGAG site for other venue dates

Read the discussion paper to get all the details of why this is required

The NZ Game Animal Hunting Council Terms of Reference for the establishment committee

One clear message from the Ministerial Panel was the need for greater co-ordination of New Zealand’s many and varied hunting sector groups and interests. A majority of the Panel recommended the establishment of a Big Game Hunting Council to co-ordinate and foster hunting and farming interests in deer, chamois, tahr and wild pigs.

The role of this Establishment Committee is to support New Zealand’s range of hunting interests across the sector to develop one national-level body that represents and advocates all their interests.

The Establishment Committee will advise the government on the creation of the Big Game Hunting Council, as a statutory authority, to carry out, inter alia, the following functions and responsibilities:

  • To encourage participation in hunting and farming of deer, chamois, tahr and wild pigs.
  • To co-ordinate hunting activities to reduce conflicts.
  • To establish agreed national standards for hunting activities.
  • To advocate for the interests of its membership to the Minister of Conservation and to the public generally.
  • Develop management strategies for big game animals.
  • To advise the Minister on matters relating to the management of big game animals in New Zealand.
  • Any other matters the Establishment Committee or the Minister may consider necessary.

Police call for change to airgun legislation

posted 17 Jul 2009 16:08 by Central Shooters Inc Webmaster   [ updated 17 Jul 2009 18:00 ]

The new Zealand Police have briefed Police Minister Judith Collins that they want a law change to require a licence for air guns with a muzzle energy in excess of 34 Joules 1

The Thorp report of 1997 (from retired judge Sir Thomas Thorp) recommended that high-powered air rifles be classified as firearms as do many other countries 2. Because the Thorp report contained many other stupid recommendation, this obvious recommendation has been ignored by two successive governments

COLFO is quoted as supporting the proposed licence change, and that seems a good move

What we have to watch out for now is what is piggybacked into the same law change, it will probably be what is required to make thumbhole stocks defined as E-Cat :-)

[1] A typical air gun pellet leaving the barrel at 213 metres per second (700 ft/s) and weighing 0.20 grams (3.1 gr) has a muzzle energy of 4.43 Joules (3.27 ft.lbf), or at 100 metres per second (330 ft/s) it will be 1.0 Joules

In comparison:

The New Zealand Police have level 3 stab proof vests which are rated at 45 J

And a common hunting rifle using 7.62 x 39 ammunition with a 123 gr (8.0 g) bullet with a muzzle velocity of 710 meters per second (2,300 ft/s) has 2,010 Joules (1,480 ft·lbf)
